  • Manmohan Juneja Committee: To review the enforcement of CSR provisions. Corporate social responsibility:In 2014, India also enacted a mandatory minimum CSR spending law. Under Companies Act, 2013, any company having a net worth of 500 crore or more or a turnover of 1,000 crore or a net profit of 5 crore must spend 2% of their net profits on CSR activities.

  • India’s first high-speed electric locomotive of 12000HP capacity launched from Madhepura Electric Locomotive Factory in Bihar. Now India joins elite list of countries, including Russia, China, Germany and Sweden that have 12,000 HP and above capacity electric locomotives.
  • Ayushman Bharat Scheme: First health & wellness centre inaugurated in Bijapur, Chhattisgarh to to mark the launch of Scheme. 10 crore families belonging to poor and vulnerable population based on Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011 (SECC) database will be covered with Rs. 5 lakh per family per year, taking care of almost all secondary care and tertiary care procedures.
  • India ranks 130th at Index of Economic Freedom 2018 released by top US based Think Tank, The Heritage Foundation. 143rd rank in previous year (2017). Top 3 countries are: Hong Kong, Singapore, New Zealand.
  • IRNSS-1I: ISRO successfully launches navigation satellite. The satellite was launched on board of PSLV-C41.

  • Gram Swaraj Abhiyan
  • Government launches Gram Swaraj Abhiyan: is a campaign that is being organised on the occasion of Ambedkar Jayanti during the period 14th April to 05th May, 2018.
  • The campaign is being held through a partnership of beneficiaries, 33 lakh elected PRIs members, 5 crore women SHG members, MLAs and MPs to achieve goals.
  • The campaign is undertaken under the name of “Sabka Sath, Sabka Gaon, Sabka Vikas”.
  • As a special endeavour during the Gram Swaraj Abhiyan, saturation of eligible households/persons would be made under seven flagship pro-poor programmes in 21,058 identified villages covering 530 districts (except Karnataka, West Bengal where Election Code of Conduct is in place). The identified schemes are as follows.

  • Saubhagya
  • Ujala scheme
  • Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

  • World Bank Report: India will grow at 7.3% in 2018 and 7.5% for 2019 and 2020.
  • The International Monetary Fund (IMF)’s Report named World Economic Outlook (WEO) has projected India to grow at 7.4% in 2018 and 7.8% in 2019. India is now the world’s sixth largest economy at $2.6 trillion (in terms of GDP), displacing France. Top 5: United States, China, Japan, Germany and United Kingdom
  • DARPAN (Digital Advancement of Rural Post Office for a New India) Project: Launched by the Ministry of Communications. To achieve total digitisation of postal operations in the country and to increase rural reach of Department of Posts.
  • Government launches first tranche of Sovereign gold bonds for FY19. It will be sold through banks, designated post offices and recognised stock exchanges namely NSE and BSE and Stock Holding Corporation of India Limited. Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) Scheme: alternative to buying physical gold. Bonds are denominated in units of one gram of gold and multiples of it. Restricted for sale to resident Indian entities, including individuals, Hindu undivided families (HUF), trusts, universities and charitable institutions. The tenor of SGB bonds is 8 years with provision of premature cancellation after 5 years on interest payment dates.
  • 2018 Pulitzer Prizes: Achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and musical composition in United States. In Journalism, New York Times won most awards of any newspaper.
  • Law Commission of India headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B.S. Chauhan favours simultaneous elections.
  • April 18: World Heritage Day. Theme: “Heritage for Generations’’.
  • Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS): NASA launches its newest planet-hunting spacecraft on SpaceX rocket.
  • TCS becomes India’s first $100 billion IT company.
  • 2018 UNESCO Press Freedom Prize: Won by Jailed Egyptian photojournalist Mahmoud Abu Zeid.
  • India ($69 billion), is the highest recipient of Remittances in 2017 followed by China ($64 billion), Philippines ($33 billion), Mexico ($31 billion) as per Migration and Development Brief by World Bank.
  • Rajesh Bindal committee On Inter-country removal and retention of children.
  • Sagar Kavach: Coastal security exercise held in Kerala.

  • April 21: Civil Services Day. Theme: ‘Evolving Strategies for Transforming Aspirational Districts’.
  • April 22: Earth Day. Theme: ‘End Plastic Pollution’.
  • 24 April: National Panchayati Raj Day. Prime Minister launched Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan at Ramnagar, tribal-dominated district of Madhya Pradesh on the occasion of this day. It aims at making rural local bodies self-sustainable, financially stable and more efficient. It will be implemented during period from April 2018 to March 2022 with outlay of Rs. 7255 crore.
  • 25 April: World Malaria Day. Theme: “Ready to beat malaria’’
  • GI tag for Telangana’s Adilabad dokra (an ancient bell metal craft ), Warangal Dhurries (a popular traditional cotton rug). At international level, GI is governed by WTO’s Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) and In India, GI tag Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection Act), 1999 governs it.
  • World’s smallest land fern Malvi’s adder’s-tongue fern discovered in Western Ghats in Gujarat’s Dang district.
  • Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices/Chairperson: Vijay Paul Sharma. Decides the MSP for various crops to central Government.
  • System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR): serves as apex forecaster of pollution trends in Delhi, Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad. It is run out of Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. SAFAR monitors pollutants like PM1, PM2.5, PM10, NOx (NO, NO2), CO, Ozone, SO2, Methane (CH4), Non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), Benzene, Mercury.
  • HARIMAU SHAKTI 2018: India-Malaysia joint training exercise to be held in Malaysia.
  • Bhabha Kavach: BARC develops cheaper, lightweight bulletproof jackets.
  • Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) wins National Intellectual Property (IP) Award 2018.
  • Indu Malhotra: First woman lawyer to sworn in as Supreme Court judge.
  • World Press Freedom Index 2018: India ranks 138th. Last year 135th. Released by France-based international non-governmental organization Reporters Without Borders. Top 3 Countries: Norway (1st), Sweden (2nd), Netherlands (3rd).
  • Gujarati poet Sitanshu Yashaschandra chosen for 2017 Saraswati Samman.
  • Van Dhan Scheme: Prime Minister launched Van Dhan Scheme of Ministry of Tribal Affairs and Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) during the celebrations of Ambedkar Jayanti (April 14) at Bijapur, Chattisgarh. It aims at economic development of tribals  involved in collection of Minor Food Produces (MFPs) by helping them in optimum utilization of natural resources.
  • International Buddhist Conference was held in Lumbini, Nepal.
  • Special 301 Report: USTR (United States Trade Representatives) again places India Priority Watch List for intellectual property protection and violation.
  • Peace Mission: Peace Mission counter-terror military exercise will be held in the Ural mountains of Russia and almost all SCO member countries are participating.
