  • The 7th India Energy Congress (IEC) 2018 was held in New Delhi. The theme for this edition of conference was Energy 4.0: Energy Transition Towards 2030. Organised by World Energy Council India (WEC India)
  • India joins Ashgabat agreement: Ashgabat Agreement aims at establishment of International Transport and Transit Corridor between the Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. It was signed in April 2011 and is named after  capital of Turkmenistan. Pakistan is also its member since October 2016. It establishes international transport and transit corridor between Central Asia and the Persian Gulf countries.

  • Shesh Anand Madhukar honoured with Sahitya Akademi Bhasha Samman award Magahi language: Magahi language also known as Magadhi is language spoken in Bihar-Jharkhand region of eastern India.
  • Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahaabhiyan (KUSUM): scheme for promoting solar farming (solar power production of up to 28,250 MW) to help farmers. The Union Budget 2018-19 has allocated Rs. 48,000 crore for the scheme for the ten-year period.

  • Green Good Deeds campaign: Launched by The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC). Aim is to sensitise people and students, in particular about climate change and global warming.
  • The ‘Pelican Bird Festival-2018’ was held for first in Atapaka Bird Sanctuary on at Kolleru lake in Andhra Pradesh. Kolleru Lake is one of the largest freshwater lakes in India located in Andhra Pradesh. It is located between Krishna and Godavari deltas.
  • Indigenously developed short-range nuclear capable ballistic Agni-1 was successfully test-fired from mobile launcher located at Integrated Test Range of Dr Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island) off the Odisha. It is a surface-to-surface, single-stage missile. It was developed by Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL) in collaboration with Defence Research Development Lab and Research Centre Imarat (RCI)
  • Tawang gets rhododendron park.
  • Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) under its “Development of Solar Cities” scheme has sanctioned development of 60 Solar Cities.
  • Prime Minister Research Fellows Scheme: aimed at attracting the talent pool of the country to doctoral (Ph.D.) programs of Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for carrying out research in cutting edge science and technology domains, with focus on national priorities. Monthly fellowship: Selected students through selection process laid down in PMRF Guidelines will be offered monthly fellowship of Rs.70,000 for first two years, Rs.75,000 for 3rd year and Rs.80,000 in 4th and 5th years. Research grant of 2.00 lakh for period of 5 years to cover their foreign travel expenses will be additional.
  • Only two Indian institutes have
  • featured in the top 50 Asian institutes in recently released by TIMES Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings for educational institutes in Asia. The two institutes in top 50 are Indian Institute of Science (29th rank) and Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (44.).

  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved to enhance target base of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) from 5 crore to 8 crore. The revised target of PMUY will be achieved by 2020. PMUY: Launched in May 2016 with the tagline of Swachh Indhan, Behtar Jeevan. It aims to provide free of cost LPG (cooking gas) connections to women from BPL Households.

  • Prithvi-II missile: Prithvi-II is short range surface-to-surface ballistic It is 9 metre long, single-stage liquid-fuelled missile capable of carrying 500-1,000 kilogram of warheads.
  • Cabinet approves Amendment to MSME Act to change classification criteria. New Classification Criteria: Micro enterprise: It will be unit with annual turnover does not exceed Rs. 5 crore. Small enterprise: It will be unit with annual turn over is more than Rs. 5 crore but does not exceed Rs. 75 crore. Medium enterprise: It will be unit with annual turnover is more than Rs. 75 crore but does not exceed Rs. 250 crore.
  • MSME is second largest employment generating sector after agriculture sector. It provides 80% of jobs in industry with just 20% of investment. It contributes around 31% to nation’s GDP.

  • India’s Aadhaar and Umang App have won awards at recently concluded 6th World Government Summit 2018 in Dubai. Umang stands for Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. Its aim is to provide convenient services to its citizens.
  • BHEL bags Rs 560-cr order to supply FGD to NTPC: Flu-Gas Desulfurization (FGD) technology used to remove sulphur-dioxide (SO2) from exhaust flue gases of fossil-fuel power plants. Flue Gases is mixture of gases produced by combustion of fuel and other materials in power stations and various industrial plants and released via flu (ducts) in atmosphere. It largely contains oxides of nitrogen derived from combustion of air, sulphur oxides, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, water vapour, excess oxygen, oxygen, particulate matter like soot.
  • China will host 2018 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit at Qingdao. Members of the organization are China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, India and Pakistan. Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia have observer status.

  • Dhanush missile: Nuclear-capable surface-to-surface Dhanush ballistic missile was successfully test-fired. Dhanush missile is also known as Prithvi-III.  It is naval variant of indigenously-developed Prithvi-II missile.
  • India’s indigenous developed light transport aircraft SARAS PT1N has successfully completed second test-flight.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to link SWIFT (Society for World Inter bank Financial Telecommunication System platform) with their core banking solutions (CBS). SWIFT is global financial messaging service that enables financial institutions worldwide to send and receive information about financial transaction. It was founded in 1973 and its headquarter is in La Hulpe, Belgium.
  • India imposed anti-dumping duty on import of ceramic tableware and kitchenware from China to protect domestic producers.
  • Revitalising Infrastructure and Systems in Education (RISE): It aims to lend low-cost funds to government higher educational institutions. Under it, all centrally-funded institutes (CFIs), including central universities, IITs, IIMs, NITs and IISERs can borrow from a Rs 1,00,000 crore corpus over next 4 years .
  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), launched ‘Bal Aadhaar’, meant for kids under 5 years. It will have blue colour. It will be linked with one of parent’s Aadhaar card. Bal Aadhaar will have no biometric identification, like Iris scan or fingerprint scans as Biometrics are not developed for children before 5 years of age.

  • RBI raises ETCD trading limit to $100 million for residents and foreign portfolio investors. ECTD: An exchange traded currency derivativeis a financial instrument that trades on a regulated exchange and whose value is based on the value of another asset.
  • West Bengal becomes first state to opt out of National Health Protection Scheme: NHPS (Ayushman Bharat Scheme) dubbed ‘Modicare’ seeks to provide health insurance of Rs 5 Lakh to 10 crore poor and vulnerable households. Under it, up to Rs 5 lakh insurance cover will be provided to each family per year in secondary and tertiary care institutions.
